Position Summary

The Community Outreach Coordinator strengthens the Roanoke Valley’s capacity to prevent and respond to sexual violence through trauma-informed education, outreach, and community engagement. This position builds and maintains collaborative relationships with community groups, schools, service providers, and local leaders to promote a coordinated community response to sexual violence. The Coordinator develops and facilitates awareness programs, trainings, and outreach activities rooted in best practices and cultural humility. In addition to community education responsibilities, this position provides direct crisis intervention services through the 24-hour hotline, including responding to crisis calls and offering in-person hospital accompaniment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver sexual violence education and awareness programming grounded in community-based, trauma-informed best practices.
  • Tailor outreach initiatives to the unique needs, demographics, and circumstances of the Roanoke Valley.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community groups, service providers, schools, colleges, and grassroots organizations to promote a coordinated community response to sexual violence.
  • Represent SARA on community councils, coalitions, and task forces.
  • Create culturally specific outreach and education content to promote inclusivity and accessibility for diverse communities.
  • Coordinate community engagement events, awareness campaigns, and presentations to increase visibility of SARA and its services.
  • Collaborate with SARA leadership to identify gaps in community education and recommend strategic outreach priorities.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and documentation.
  • Participate in supervision and team communication.
  • Uphold organizational policies, values, and ethical standards.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; relevant experience in community outreach, prevention education, or advocacy may substitute.
  • Knowledge of sexual violence, trauma-informed practices, and community-based outreach, including an understanding of how sexual violence intersects with other forms of oppression.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including comfort with public speaking, facilitation, and presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including planning, time management, documentation, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, crisis-responsive environment.
  • Ability to build rapport and collaborate effectively with community members, organizations, schools, multidisciplinary teams, and culturally diverse groups.
  • Comfort and competence in providing supportive crisis intervention, including hotline coverage and in-person advocacy response.
  • Commitment to anti-oppression principles, equity, and community-centered violence prevention.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
  • Ability to work primarily on-site.
  • Ability to participate in flexible scheduling within agency policy, including evening or weekend hours as needed.
  • Ability to engage in direct communication and supervision.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Experience in nonprofit, advocacy, or human services settings.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed or survivor-centered work.
  • Experience working collaboratively in small teams.

Schedule & Work Environment

SARA is a 24-hour agency. This position is primarily based on standard weekday office hours, with some evening and weekend hours required to meet program and community needs.

The role is primarily on-site to support collaboration, supervision, and service delivery. Flexible scheduling and limited telecommuting/work-from-home options are available within established agency policy and operational needs, and are not guaranteed.

This role requires:

  • Comfort with direct communication.
  • Willingness to take responsibility for mistakes and engage in repair.
  • Respect for supervision and organizational structure.
  • Commitment to anti-triangulation practices.

This position is best suited for someone who values clarity, accountability, and sustainable work practices.

Interview Process

Preliminary interviews are scheduled to begin the week of June 29, 2026.

Second interviews are scheduled for the week of July 6, 2026. Those selected for second interviews, will be required to provide a 15 minute presentation. Presentation guidelines will be provided.

The intended start date for this position is Monday, August 10, 2026.
